Senior Designer

The position of Senior Designer contributes to the success of Black Ink by designing and overseeing the schematic design, design development and project management for our residential and/or commercial studio projects.

The senior designer will be expected to curate a visual representation of the project concept and communicate the Principal Designer's objectives orally and visually. The designer will be expected to manage all project-related tasks and client meetings through construction administration. You will be working directly with the Principal Designer, collaborating with fellow studio members, clients, consultants, architects and artists + artisans.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the development and realization of project from start to finish

  • Research and analyze client goals and outline those needs to team members

  • Create preliminary space plans in CAD as concept and massing studies based on knowledge of local code and the principles of Interior Design

  • Lead team in conceiving of project concept + design to meet client program and project budget constraints

  • Confirm that preliminary space plans and design concepts are safe, functional, aesthetically appropriate and meet all public health, safety and welfare requirements.

  • Lead team in performing field visits/measurements and construction administration services including site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing control samples and shop drawings as well as coordinating with consultants, manufacturers, contractors and completing punch list

  • Present design presentations to clients and consultants

  • Manage design coordination between clients and consultants

  • Coordinate and participate in the preparation of all contract documents including:

    • Design presentations

    • 3D Models & views

    • Rendered plans, elevations, and views

    • Specifications and drawings

    • Finish, hardware, & plumbing selection + specifications

    • FF+E selection

    • Custom furniture design and documentation

  • Curate finish palette to appropriately convey the design concept, life-cycle performance and safety requirements

  • Select and specify furniture, fixtures, equipment + millwork, inclusive of drawing layouts with detailed product descriptions

  • Facilitate procurement, pricing, ordering and installation of furniture

  • Work with Principal to review scope, schedule, budget, staffing needs, and project milestones

  • Ensure on-time delivery of all deliverables throughout the course of the project

RESEARCH + DEVELOPMENT:

  • Attend vendor presentations + inform team of new and innovative products

  • Observe + communicate historic design through research as well as current trends in the residential and hospitality markets

  • Contribute to studio growth + development goals

  • Pursue individual professional/skill development as required continued education by team Black Ink

QUALIFICATIONS+CORE COMPETENCIES:

  • Minimum of 6yrs experience in residential design or proven skill level

  • Experience in hospitality / commercial design

  • Architecture or Interior Design degree from an accredited 4yr+ program

  • Knowledge of commercial building standards, fire safety codes, ADA codes, and applicable codes for textiles, furnishings, and finishes

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, ArchiCAD or Revit. *We are an Apple-based design company

  • Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign

  • Strong conceptual design approach with excellent presentation skills - both verbal and visual

  • Ability to think outside of current popular trends to push for unique and one of a kind design aesthetics is a MUST

  • Proven organizational abilities and attention to detail with the ability to manage multiple projects across various phases

  • Strong experience in management and coordination of drawing sets with knowledge of custom detailing is a plus

  • Is collaborative, self-motivated, positive and flexible

  • Even-keeled and remains calm and professional under pressure

  • Honest and ethical - adheres to the values, beliefs and principles of excellence in design

  • Takes personal responsibility for the continuous learning of new knowledge, skills and experiences 

  • Able to successfully function during times of uncertainty and changing priorities

  • Must have excellent customer service skills and be comfortable interacting with clients, consultants, vendors and the internal studio

  • Must have reliable car and be willing to travel
